Claud Butler Anglo Continental - 1937

Owned by: Ron Staffe

C B Staff RB 1

Frame Claud Butler Anglo Continental. The frame number is difficult to read but definitely starts with a seven, so I assume it's a 1937.
Wheels Airlite large flange front hub, 1937 Sturmey Archer AW rear hub, 27 inch Weinmann HP rims.Gripfast front wingnuts, Sturmey Archer rear wingnuts.
Chainset BSA 5-pin
Pedals Chater-Lea
Gears 1937 Sturmey Archer AW 3 speed built by Peter Read of Phoenix Hub Gear Co, Milton Keynes. Top tube quadrant type lever. Cyclo 3 speed converter from Nick Tithecott at H Lloyd's. Osgear Super Champion derailleur giving nine-speeds, ranging from 42" to 108". The only downside is that the largest cog has to be engaged with caution, as the usual  spoke protector won' t fit.
Brakes LAM Super Dural
Stem/Bars Stem/bars: 1930s wide bars (48.5cm) of unknown make on headclip stem.
Headset Headclip
Saddle Brooks B17
Extra details I bought the frame on E-bay and  had it repainted by Bob Jacksons at Leeds. The forks are not original but have a very attractive crown which I think dates from the early fifties. I thought that the colours on the  1937 Claud which is already posted went well together so I decided on those, with double box lining and block letterng on the down tube instead of script. I also had the rear dropouts slightly widened.
My gear conversion from the previous Simplex was inspired by Bob Damper's article on hybrid gears. Lighting: Lucas front lamp, Drydex rear lamp, both battery operated
